FAQs

Why the name Wise Oak?
Whilst oak trees represent different things for different cultures, they have long been held sacred and represented in a variety of myths, dating back to ancient Greek and Celtic civilisations, but also Indigenous Native American civilisations. To different people they symbolize resilience, strength, stability, protection, healing, commitment, knowledge, dignity, and power. These are attributes we wish to draw upon throughout our therapeutic relationship.
What is online therapy?

Online therapy is an appointment that is held over a video call rather than in person. It is a way to connect with your clinical psychologist from home. With the evolution of secure videoconferencing platforms, psychological therapy can now be conducted safely and securely online. It works in similar ways to Facetime or Skype.

Which platform does Wise Oak Psychology use?

Wise Oak Psychology utilises the doxy.me platform, which implements state of the art security and encryption protocols to assure that data integrity and privacy is maintained. As a result, doxy.me complies with GDPR requirements. It does not require you to download any software or create an account. You just need a browser on your computer and device with a camera and microphone.

How does it work?

Online psychological therapy sessions work just the same as in-person consultations. Before your scheduled session, you will receive an email with a link to join the online session. Click on the link and your session will begin.

Is online therapy for me?

Having virtual therapy appointments can be more flexible for both parties, and just as effective.

Online talking therapy is a safe, flexible, and confidential space, which means you can:

  • Take your session even if you’re travelling or navigating a busy schedule.
  • Relax in the comfort of your own home.
  • Save time and money on transport and childcare.
Is it just as effective?

Recent research shows that online CBT therapy is as effective as in-person treatment when it comes to depression and anxiety.

What equipment do I need?

You simply need a computer with a microphone and camera, internet connection, and a private area – a space where you can talk freely, preferably a room with a door that closes with no other people in the room. You may need to print or have access to any reading or other materials sent to you by your clinician.

How do I prepare for the session?

We recommend you sign in to your email 5-10 minutes ahead of the appointment and wait for your clinician to invite you to join the meeting via email.

What are the benefits of therapy?
Therapy can help you learn healthier coping strategies, which are actions we take either consciously or unconsciously to deal with stress or difficult feelings. Unhealthy or unhelpful coping strategies may provide relief in the short-term, but can have negative consequences in the long-term. In your treatment you can learn new tools for coping with problems that will support more positive outcomes in the long-term.

  • A therapist provides a non-judgmental, objective lens. They can quickly identify areas that are holding you back as well as action points to support you to change and grow.
  • Therapy can help you change negative and unhelpful thought patterns and actions that may be affecting your confidence and relationships. With practice, you can reshape these thoughts into more helpful ones to rebuild your self-esteem and your interpersonal relationships.
  • Through the process of therapy, you will likely find that uncomfortable physical symptoms minimise. That is because the mind and body are intertwined. You may find that headaches, digestive issues, sleep quality, and even skin issues improve.
  • With treatment you can break negative cycles of interactions not just for yourself, but for future generations too.
What if there are technical difficulties?
If you are experiencing technical difficulties and are unable to join the online therapy session, please call our number on 07842608843. If you are able to log in to the session but are having difficulties with audio connection, your therapist will contact you via telephone.
